Sometimes a photoshoot is less about the props, and more about the story you want to tell—and with my friend Juan, it’s always a story worth capturing. Hailing from Mexico Lindo and known for his sharp style and infectious confidence, Juan isn’t just a model—he’s also a talented fashion designer with an eye for details you just can’t fake.
The Vision
Juan wanted a “boss” look—a portrait oozing attitude, class, and a little bit of that old-school, cinematic swagger. What better prop than a cigar? So, we hit the streets in search of the perfect local cigar shop, making the experience feel as authentic as the final image. Juan, ever the stylist, curated his entire outfit for the session, blending personal taste with a dash of dramatic flair.
The Creative Setup
With the scene and wardrobe set, I kept the lighting simple but effective: one light, precisely placed, to carve out strong shadows for that unmistakable “power play” mood. I shot with my Tokina wide angle lens, letting the background fall away and making Juan—and every element of his self-designed ensemble—the clear focal point.
The Artistry (and The Trick)
Here’s the behind-the-scenes secret: I told Juan to pretend he was lighting the cigar—we wanted drama, not an accidental fire! The real magic happened in post. On my staple textured grey Photoshop background, I meticulously created the effect of real flame, giving the image punch and authenticity without ever striking a match. As usual, every bit of retouching was my own—because when it comes to capturing the mood and vision, only I know when it’s truly done.
Why I Retouch Every Pixel
There’s something deeply personal about finishing my own images. Each shoot—especially with friends like Juan—deserves a touch that understands not just technique, but intention. Retouching is where a photo becomes a portrait, and a session turns into a narrative.
The Result
The finished image is everything Juan hoped for: bold, boss-like, and laced with subtle details—from the glint of the (Photoshopped!) flame to the textures in his custom wardrobe. It’s an image that doesn’t just capture a look, but radiates personality, style, and a story of collaboration between photographer and muse.
Want portraits that go beyond the pose—where styling, storytelling, and a sprinkle of creative magic come together? Let’s make your vision a reality.
