Get expert tips to prepare for your premium photoshoot in DC, Maryland, or Virginia. From wardrobe to mindset, make your session smooth and stress-free.
A great photoshoot doesn’t just happen—it’s planned. Whether you’re booking a professional headshot, a branding session, or a family portrait in the DMV, preparation is the key to making sure your images look polished, authentic, and premium. With over two decades of creative and photography experience, I’ve put together this guide to help clients feel confident and ready before stepping in front of the camera.
1. Choose the Right Outfits
Wardrobe plays a huge role in the final look of your photos.
-
Do: Bring 2–3 options, including neutrals and one statement piece.
-
Avoid: Busy patterns that distract from your face.
-
Pro Tip: If in doubt, I’ll provide styling guidance to align with your goals.
2. Grooming & Self-Care
Looking your best starts with self-care before the shoot.
-
Fresh haircut or trim (ideally 1 week before)
-
Clean, moisturized skin
-
Nails neat and polished (even natural)
-
For makeup: go natural, but polished—photos enhance every detail
3. Rest & Hydrate
It may sound simple, but being well-rested and hydrated makes a visible difference in your energy, skin, and confidence. Aim for a good night’s sleep and drink plenty of water the day before your session.
4. Bring Personal Touches
Props and accessories can help tell your story. Whether it’s a laptop for branding, a book you love, or even your pet, these details make the photos feel authentic and personal.
5. Timing & Location
Be intentional about your location. The DMV has incredible spots—from the historic charm of Georgetown to the modern vibe of The Wharf. Your appointment will be scheduled at the best time of day for lighting (morning or golden hour), but punctuality is key for a smooth session.
6. Trust the Process
The biggest preparation tip? Come with an open mind. I guide you through posing, lighting, and expression so you never feel “stuck.” Relax, enjoy, and let the session feel natural—those are always the best photos.
Why Preparation Matters
Photos are more than images—they’re investments. Preparing ensures your time, energy, and resources result in timeless portraits that reflect the best version of you.
