Every once in a while, a portrait session turns into something much more—a true collaboration where energy, artistry, and personality collide. That’s exactly what happened when YAYA walked into my studio. Her name alone is impossible to forget—distinct, melodic, the perfect match for an artist and singer whose spirit fills the room before she even utters a note.
The Vibe
YAYA isn’t just a singer—she’s a performer in every sense. Her presence is electrifying, with boundless enthusiasm and a joy that sparks creativity on both sides of the lens. From the first moment, I knew this would be a shoot that’s all about capturing vibe as much as visuals.
The Setup
For this session, I leaned on my all-time favorite portrait backdrop: the thunder grey seamless (neutral grey). It’s a backdrop that wears every color well—outfits pop, skin tones come alive, and makeup details stand out just right. As a photographer, it’s a secret weapon: whatever look a client brings, thunder grey elevates it, making my job both seamless and stylish.
On the tech side, I reached for my Canon 70–200mm lens—a classic for close-up portraits with beautiful background compression and super crisp facial detail. Lighting was my go-to scheme for dramatic, modern headshots: two rectangular softboxes, one perched on each side just above her shoulders for a sculpted, dimensional pop; and a beauty dish front and center for perfect, even light that brings out every feature.
Capturing YAYA
With music floating through the studio and YAYA’s personality shining, it didn’t take long to capture truly dynamic images. Each shot of her radiated the same vibrance and soul she brings to the stage—a confidence and joy that’s beautifully contagious, both in person and on film. The interplay between the soft-edged rectangles and the crisp central glow from the beauty dish highlighted her energy, drawing viewers straight to her eyes and the ready laughter in her smile.
Why This Shot Works
Great portraits aren’t just about gear or lighting—they’re about understanding the subject, knowing how to elevate personality with every technical choice. With YAYA, the neutral thunder grey served as the perfect stage for her charisma, while the lighting setup sculpted her features and broadcast that unmistakable star quality. It’s the kind of image that doesn’t just show you how someone looks, but lets you feel who they are.
Final Thoughts
This session with YAYA was a perfect blend of artistry, technique, and good vibes—a tribute to the power of great lighting, the right background, and a subject whose passion shines through. Whether she’s in front of the camera or a crowd, YAYA is unforgettable, and this portrait brings every ounce of her energy to life.
